Where it comes from
Compass is based on Rover Resume by Subidit, an open-source LaTeX résumé built on a deliberately anti-complexity idea: no custom document class, just a handful of lines of ordinary LaTeX you can actually read and edit. Its “Base Rover” lays out a full résumé in about ten lines.
That restraint is the point. Compass leans into hierarchy, repetition, and alignment — the layout fundamentals Rover is built around — to produce the most conservative, most reliably parseable template in the set.
Rover Resume is licensed CC BY 4.0, so the credit line below is required and travels with the design.

How it parses
This is the safest choice for pure ATS reliability — one column, plain text, ruled headings, nothing a parser can trip on.
